The new Cumberland settlement quickly established seven stations or forts along the Cumberland River to offer protection for the settlers from the hostile actions of Indians, including a renegade branch of the Cherokee known as the Chickamauga.
The central station at French Lick became known as Fort Nashborough, named for Gen. Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War veteran. Fort Nashborough prospered and was renamed Nashville in 1784 to eliminate the English-sounding borough. Originally part of North Carolina, Nashville became part of the sixteenth state in the Union in 1796 and the capital of the state thirty years later.
In the early 1800s Nashville was on the edge of the “new” western frontier. An overland route between Nashville and Natchez, Mississippi, known as the Natchez Trace, played an important part in maintaining communication between the young central government in Washington and the territory to the west.
Many of the leaders of our nation came from Nashville including Andrew Jackson who was elected president of the United States in 1828.
Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama seceded from the Union. The Confederacy was established and Jefferson Davis was elected as its president in 1861. Nashville, along with the rest of Tennessee, threw itself reluctantly into the fray on the side of the Confederacy.
